Stuff That Fell Through The Cracks
In a strange way, I feel like the fact that my last post got enough attention to get taken down is worthy of being noted. So click here to see the email Blogger sent me to inform me thus.
So in spite of my best efforts, there are still bits and pieces from the music world that end up slipping under my radar and don't get the coverage they deserve here. So I'm devoting this post to giving those stories at least some of what they're due.
=Guns N Roses may yet get to fill out a tax form this year, and the American people may yet get a free Dr. Pepper. Sources close to the band confirm that retail outlet Best Buy has scored exclusivity rights to the release of Chinese Democracy, which may well be out around Thanksgiving (Rolling Stone says mark November 25th on your calendars) if sources are to be believed. It's already been confirmed that a song called "Shackler's Revenge" is on Rock Band 2 and that another song entitled "If The World" will be featured in the new Leonardo DiCaprio/Russell Crowe film Body of Lies. Word on whether or not either song will see a wider, digital release in the near future remains to be seen.
Damn, and here I thought Kevin Cogill had the exclusive rights to Chinese Democracy's release.
=Fall Out Boy are taking umbrage with the release of the video for "I Don't Care", claiming that the label tampered with the vid my adding meaningless product placement. Pete Wentz wrote a rant about it on his blog only to have it get removed by the record label, and having seen the clip in question, I can't say the band's claim is baseless. The editing of the cellphone shot is kinda shady and gratuitous, but since its only there for at best 3 seconds, not sure its worth the complaints. The video itself is fantastic though. Props for the cameos by Mark Hoppus and the fake Sarah Palin.

=Metallica is in an interesting jam regarding their new album Death Magnetic. There's been a bunch of complaints about the mastering of the CD, which apparently doesn't lend itself well to being played at loud volumes. Metallica is defending the mastering, saying it sounds exactly how they want it to sound. Likewise, someone went and remastered the album using the version released for Guitar Hero III. Props to Matt at Addicted to Vinyl for getting a copy out there. Since I'm still listening to my leaked copy I can't speak to the sound quality being bad, but anyone who knows for sure is welcome to offer their thoughts.
=Nickelback is offering their newest single "Gotta Be Somebody" for free on their website until 6AM EDT on September 30 (so for the next 6 hours from the time I'm typing this). Idolator hit it on the head when they called this track a prom song, but it's pretty good nonetheless. I can imagine this song scoring a scene somewhere near the end of this season of Smallville, what with the grandiose lyrics and Killers-esque synthesizers in the beginning of the track. Based on this and the fact that apparently Dark Horse might have a "Parental Advisory" tag on it, Nickelback may well be letting their balls drop a bit for this record, sales and spins be damned. This album might be worth the cash after all.
That's all I've got for now. The pulled post from earlier spooked me a bit, so no mp3s with this one. I'll make up for it tomorrow with a shitload of reviews and other goodies.

The Who Get Their Due At VH1's Rock Honors
Last night VH1 aired the newest installment of it's Rock Honors series, in which bands paid tribute to The Who. Said bands included the Foo Fighters (showing a bit of class allowing Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes to fill in for the temporarily vocally impaired Dave Grohl), Pearl Jam, Tenacious D and the Flaming Lips. VLMTV: New Clips from Radiohead, Buckcherry
I generally avoid music videos simply because they don't interest me all that much. But two came out in the last week worth talking about, so here we go:
Since simply putting a camera on images that might have been relevant to the vision for the song would be far too pedestrian, Thom Yorke decided that the video for Radiohead's "House of Cards" should be shot using lasers (or "lasers", for those who are still Mike Myers fans). The quote from the press release has far too much techno-babble in it, but Radiohead more or less looks like one part screensaver, one part test Visual FX from White Noise. The video itself is below, and here is a link to the making-of featurette.

On the polar opposite end of the musical spectrum, Buckcherry put out information about the release of its new album, the follow up to 2006's 15. The new album, entitled Black Butterfly, drops September 23rd, and the lead single, "Too Drunk To Fuck", will go to radio stations in the not-too-distant future, and is available for download both on their MySpace, and at the end of this entry. The song (NOT a cover of the Dead Kennedys song) is pretty much what we've come to expect from Buckcherry; raunchy, yet fun-as-hell sleaze rock with lyrics that should make you cringe, but ultimately don't. The "viral" video (not sure what makes this a viral vid) features Buckcherry straddling the line between Aerosmith and Alice Cooper at a house party, and in addition to serving as the promotional video for Black Butterfly, also works as a backhanded Public Service Announcement advising Buckcherry fans to enjoy both alcohol and the band itself responsibly.

Coldplay on The Daily Show
Coldplay played a pair of songs from Viva La Vida last night on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. For those of you who thought that Chris Martin's absurd dancing was restricted to the usually-absurd iTunes ads, I've got news for you:

European Soccer Fans Rocking Like It's 2003
Ask any official in the 2008 EURO Championships, and he'll tell you that the official song for Europe's biggest football (that's our soccer, kids) tournament is "Can You Hear Me" by Enrique Iglesias. The fans seem to have something different in mind.

Sure the song's 5 years old now, but when the alternative is Enrique? Weighing in on the Prince/Radiohead Clusterf--k
News of Prince's cover of Radiohead's "Creep" from Coachella this year has traveled far and wide, but somehow the controversy around it has only just now kicked up. The basic facts: Prince is ridiculously stingy about the amount footage from his concerts and his overall image on the internet (he shut down his website and declared war on eBay and YouTube over his material). Prince covered Radiohead's breakout hit. Video of said performance hit the web, as a reasonable person might expect would happen. Prince's label has squashed nearly every video of the show, citing a copyright violation.
Problem is, Prince doesn't own the rights to the song. Thom Yorke does. Based on Radiohead's attitudes toward digital content, a reasonable person would suggest that Radiohead wouldn't mind the video's existence. Thom Yorke recently said so in an interview. And yet, footage of the video is still getting stomped on by NPG. That said...
I post the video on the following grounds:
1) Prince doesn't own the rights to "Creep". Thom Yorke has more or less given the video his blessing
2) This material was filmed by a fan in attendance at the concert. Again, Prince has no grounds here.
3) It is true that Prince owns the right to his image, and if he really wants to be a dick about it, he can impose a draconian code on how that image is transmitted. But if you can watch the video above and positively identify that the man on stage is Prince and not just a guy in a bright white suit singing (the wrong lyrics to) Radiohead's "Creep", then maybe there's grounds. In my view, no video I've found gets a good enough look to tell Prince from Michael Jackson circa 1981.
(Wait...you mean people at the concert couldn't make that distinction either? Oh...)
This is a very interesting situation for all the reasons above, but there's one fatal flaw: save for the mildly interesting-but-too-long guitar solo, Prince's version sucks. It's just a subpar performance of a song that Radiohead has all but disavowed. I don't know what Prince was trying to accomplish in covering the track, but what he's done is piss off the general internet-saavy, music-enjoying public. Smooth.

The 3 Doors Down Single That Isn't...Really
It's been a long time since a song has been able to give me chills after repeated listens, but for the last few weeks I've had one song that has given me goosebumps after every single play. "Citizen Soldier" is an unofficial single released by 3 Doors Down after its successful use in a National Guard commercial/music video (said video is below). I usually scoff when bands release singles that are blatantly patriotic, since its usually just a big marketing ploy to score a hit on country rock stations. "Citizen Soldier" is way different in my mind. For one, there's nothing country about this track. This is the hardest song I've heard the band do since "Kryptonite". It's also much more subtle; there are no mentions of the war in the song or the video, it's more of a tribute to the individual, not the cause or the institution. And in that sense, 3 Doors Down REALLY succeeds.
The thing is, this song would simultaneously be a great and terrible single. It would be great for the band, since the press it would get would send the song skyrocketing up the charts. The problem is it would polarize too much that I almost think you'd get a reverse-Dixie Chicks situation. This time, the overly cynical anti-war folk would be blind to what the song REALLY says and radio stations in big liberal areas would try to limit its play. That's a real shame, since for the first time, I think we've written a song about soldiers that doesn't take a definite stand on any conflict. Kudos to 3 Doors Down for writing a brilliant track, a song 100 times better than "It's Not My Time", the single they currently have on the radio.

New vids from the Foo, Linkin Park
Earlier today the Foo Fighters premiered the video for new single "Long Road To Ruin" on MTV.com (a pleasant surprise; I had heard the next single was "Cheer Up Boys, Your Makeup is Running"). The video is classic Dave Grohl weirdness set to the backdrop of a bad soap opera complete with characters like "Saul Goode" and "Les Groper". Oh yeah, and the song is effing amazing
And a few weeks ago, Linkin Park released their video for "Shadow of the Day", their third single from Minutes to Midnight and yet another video directed by band member Joe Hahn. The video is traditionally dark, but as per the theme of the new album, much more insightful and powerful than the Linkin Park of old. I especially like the sound effects over top of the music. Another great song from an amzing album

First Peek at New Jimmy Eat World

Jack's Mannequin, Pearl Jam do stuff at Lollapalooza
Jack's Mannequin, the side project from Something Corporate frontman Andrew McMahon, played a new song at the Lollapalooza concert this past weekend. The song, entitled "Cellular Phone" indicates the JM will be returning for another album, though McMahon has previously said that Something Corporate has not disbanded.
The video quality isn't great, but there's also an MP3 below.

Pearl Jam also made waves at the festival; during their hit "Daughter", Eddie Vedder started singing Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall", interjecting the line "George Bush, leave this world alone". AT&T, which was streaming the weekend-long concert on its website, had a wonderfully convenient audio glitch during the song, so that fans watching on their computer heard nothing. Pearl Jam has expressed concern over the matter, and is encouraging fans to go to their website and report other politically motivated censorship incidents on the part of AT&T. On the other hand, AT&T swears that the glitch was not an act of censorship, and is working to correct the audio problem on the stream. Vedder made other politically charged statements in the concert that weren't edited, so I'm inclined to tell Pearl Jam to lighten up a bit, though I can see why they're so mad.

VLM Makes A Triumphant Return!!
OK everybody, I'm back! The month off was pretty awesome, but let's just dive in to the music!
-The Foo is back! The Foo Fighters have set September 25th as the release date for their new album, Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace. A tentative tracklisting is on their myspace page, and early last week the first single "The Pretender" leaked onto the internet. The song isn't quite as good as "The Best of You", but as a sign of what's to come on the new album, I'll take it. In addition, the Foo Fighters have released a 10th anniversary edition of The Colour and the Shape with new bonus tracks. Normally this would suck and reek of corporate underpinnings, but since the bonus tracks are decent and they don't jack the price of the album up, it marks another classy move by the always awesome Dave Grohl.
Ruling on the Field: 6.5/10

-Joining in on the fun is Jimmy Eat World, who slated October 16th as the release for Chase This Light, and also re-released Clarity and Static Prevails in anticipation. No single out yet, but look for one in the next few weeks.

-A very large (and probably long overdue) "F--k you!" goes out to Chad Kroeger and the guys from Nickelback. The commercially angsty Canucks just reissued their 2005 smash All the Right Reasons with three pointless live tracks and a DVD of music videos. Since I'm pretty sure everyone who's going to buy All the Right Reasons already did so, this move just marks a cheap marketing ploy to scrounge another 30 bucks out of Nickelback's "hardcore" fans. Real smooth, guys...real smooth.
Ruling on the Field: Fuck you, Nickelback!!
-I Ruckused Sum 41's controversial new album Underclass Hero shortly after coming home, and damn it if it isn't a throwback to what punk rock is SUPPOSED to sound like! The title track is a ballbuster of the highest caliber, and nothing on the album is inherently bad, it just tends to lean into territory already walked by the likes of Blink 182. Regardless, Sum 41 comes through again with what might be the most underrated punk album of the year.
Ruling on the field: 7.5/10
Highlight Reel: "Underclass Hero", "Speak of the Devil", "March of the Dogs"
-My list of CDs I need to hear has expanded, now including Who We Are from Lifehouse (tentative ruling based on what I have heard: 8.5/10), Smashing Pumpkins' new album Zeitgeist, and the new one from Velvet Revolver. More on those when I sit down and hear them in full.

-The Foo is back! The Foo Fighters have set September 25th as the release date for their new album, Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace. A tentative tracklisting is on their myspace page, and early last week the first single "The Pretender" leaked onto the internet. The song isn't quite as good as "The Best of You", but as a sign of what's to come on the new album, I'll take it. In addition, the Foo Fighters have released a 10th anniversary edition of The Colour and the Shape with new bonus tracks. Normally this would suck and reek of corporate underpinnings, but since the bonus tracks are decent and they don't jack the price of the album up, it marks another classy move by the always awesome Dave Grohl.

-Joining in on the fun is Jimmy Eat World, who slated October 16th as the release for Chase This Light, and also re-released Clarity and Static Prevails in anticipation. No single out yet, but look for one in the next few weeks.

-A very large (and probably long overdue) "F--k you!" goes out to Chad Kroeger and the guys from Nickelback. The commercially angsty Canucks just reissued their 2005 smash All the Right Reasons with three pointless live tracks and a DVD of music videos. Since I'm pretty sure everyone who's going to buy All the Right Reasons already did so, this move just marks a cheap marketing ploy to scrounge another 30 bucks out of Nickelback's "hardcore" fans. Real smooth, guys...real smooth.

-I Ruckused Sum 41's controversial new album Underclass Hero shortly after coming home, and damn it if it isn't a throwback to what punk rock is SUPPOSED to sound like! The title track is a ballbuster of the highest caliber, and nothing on the album is inherently bad, it just tends to lean into territory already walked by the likes of Blink 182. Regardless, Sum 41 comes through again with what might be the most underrated punk album of the year.

-My list of CDs I need to hear has expanded, now including Who We Are from Lifehouse (tentative ruling based on what I have heard: 8.5/10), Smashing Pumpkins' new album Zeitgeist, and the new one from Velvet Revolver. More on those when I sit down and hear them in full.

Akon was a Pro Wrestler back in the 1980s
This footage from an Akon concert found its way onto What Would Tyler Durden Do? yesterday. While Akon talks to the fans onstage (probably about what hip-hop was like in the 1960s or how he didn't really know that girl was 14), someone throws something (Idolator says its a frisbee) at Akon on stage. What ensues...well, take a look. Quality isn't great, but it had the best view of what happens.
So not only is Akon a million years old and a pedophile, he was also a professional wrestler? Does any other artist have a resume that even comes close to this one. More importantly, is this a bad thing?

My Chemical Romance is Sarcastic...Again...
After a month long delay out of respect for those killed in the tragedy at Virginia Tech in April, My Chemical Romance finally released the single and video for "Teenagers", the fourth single off 2006's The Black Parade.
The video is pretty straightforward by MCR standards. Band performs, kids riot, twisted cheerleaders...the usual really. In an effort to show respect for the VT tragedy, the band tacked on a public service ad at the end of the video encouraging people to reach out and seek help instead of turning to violence (the song alludes to a school shooting, hence the delay and PSA). Idolator was one of the first to notice the similarities between the videos for "Teenagers" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit", complete with rioting teens in a gym, cheerleaders and the whole reaching out motif, but like always, MCR does so with its tongue firmly planted in its cheek. All in all another great video from My Chemical Romance. Now I'm just waiting for the inevitable B-Sides to hit iTunes.
Oh, and one more thing; congratualtions to MCR frontman Gerard Way, who late last week announced his engagement to his girlfriend, known only as Eliza.
